Apple got a lot of criticism for the Apple Maps app shipping with iOS 6. iPhone 5 users around the world found numerous errors in the map data and some users miss features like transit navigation. According to the New York Times Google is working on an iOS 6 Maps app, but it is supposed to be finished at the earliest end of the year.
My assumption is that by then Apple has fixed Apple Maps and the number of users that will download Google Maps app for iOS 6 will be not dramatic. If Google would release the new Google Maps app today it would draw a huge user base. Google should have thought about that and prepare the Maps app earlier.

The “geek mind” is concerned with more than just the latest iPhone rumors, or which company will win the gaming console wars. I4U is concerned with more than just the latest photo shoot or other celebrity gossip.
The “geek mind” is concerned with life, in all its different forms and facets. The geek mind wants to know about societal and financial issues, both abroad and at home. If a Fortune 500 decides to raise their minimum wage, or any high priority news, the geek mind wants to know. The geek mind wants to know the top teams in the National Football League, or who’s likely to win the NBA Finals this coming year. The geek mind wants to know who the hottest new models are, or whether the newest blockbuster movie is worth seeing. The geek mind wants to know. The geek mind wants—needs—knowledge.
