The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X969 MP3 CD WMA Car CD Receiver

by Zane Laughbon

The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X969 CD receiver (MSRP: $700, available March) features 3D MASK™, an all-new motorized 3-dimensional, 2-piece control panel, LCD display, and SRS® “WOW” sound enhancement technology, well-suited to improving audio performance in vehicles. The KDC-X969 plays MP3 files from CD, CD-R, CD-R/W, as well as WMA files. 3D MASK features a motorized faceplate that flips over and down, “splitting” to reveal two panels, one that incorporates the receiver’s operating and “soft key” controls; and a second panel that features a large, high-resolution display for text and graphics. When closed, the faceplate flips back up, hiding both the display and control panel, and showing a “blank” face to the outside world. For security, a portion of the 3D MASK faceplate is removable, and the receivers also provide a programmable security code.
The KDC-X969 can receive SIRIUS satellite radio signals and HD Radio broadcasts. KDC-X969 SRS WOW elevates sound vertically, which is useful in vehicles where speakers are often located in kick panels and other low areas. It creates the perception of a 3-dimensional sound field — including a pronounced center channel — with conventional 2-channel stereo, and it uses bass harmonics to create the aural impression of very low frequencies, even from small speakers. The top of the line Excelon CD receiver compatible with the KHD-CX910 Kenwood Excelon Music Keg (MSRP: $600), a 20 gig hard drive system that records, organizes, stores and plays MP3, WMA, WAV and FLAC digital music files. See Video Commerical The KDC-X969 provides 50 Watts x 4 channel amplifier power, a redesigned ergonomic remote control, CD changer control, and a CD transport mechanism providing rapid disc loading and ejection.
