Sony at least raised my eyebrow a bit, when they introduced yesterday the same old Playstation controller design as the new PS3 controller.
On the one hand I understand the argument that this controller design is so well established and Sony gamers all around the world know it. On the other hand Sony introduced 3D motion sensing inside the controller, which could require a new design to fully use its potential. Nintendo went this way with their controller design. Sony also had to sacrifice shock, which is kind of a step backward.
The 3D controller technology inside the PS3 controller is technically behind the Nintendo Wii controller. IGN has a good feature by feature comparison between the PS3 controller and the 'Wiimote'. This, the fact that Sony initially had a the weird banana controller on display last year and that the controller has the old design does not flatter Sony and the Nintendo fan community has enough pointers to make fun about the Sony PS3 controller.
In today's Nintendo press event at the E3 2006 we will hopefully see the Wii controller in action.
