Plextor announced new internal Blu-ray drives today with a pair of drives that combine HD DVD and Blu-ray into one device. The PX-B920SA drive can write to BD-R discs at 4x and uses a SATA interface. Plextor says this drive is ideal for OEMs where playback of the defunct HD DVD format is wanted along with Blu-ray playback and burning.
In addition to writing to Blu-ray the PX-B920SA can write to DVD and CD media as well. Plextor also announced the PX-B300SA drive that can also play Blu-ray and HD DVD media as well as read and write to CD and DVD, but can't write to Blu-ray media. This drive uses SATA interface as well. The PX-B920SA will be available in late March for $449.99 and the PX-B300SA will retail for $599.99.
"With the recent end of the DVD format wars, these new combos drives from Plextor still offer customers the freedom to view high-definition video media they prefer to use, whether Blu-Ray or HD DVD," said Amber Wang, director of new business development and marketing at Plextor. "According to Home Media, more than 1.5 million HD DVD movies have been sold in the United States to date. Our new drives give customers the ability to play HD DVD movies as well as Blu-ray discs."
