German DVD-D Germany Ltd. offers a DVD disc that deletes itself after 48 hours. This limited time DVDs are already on the market in France, Italy and Scandinavian countries.
The DVD-D movie discs come in sealed cardboard sleeves. Only when you open the sleeve the time starts to count down. If you leave the DVD-D disc inside the sleeve you can keep it even for years.
How exactly the deleting of the data stored on the DVD-D is not disclosed. It is some chemical process that starts when the disc is exposed to air outside the cardboard sleeve protection.
DVD-D discs are of course ideal for movie and video game rental services. Just imagine how much money Netflix would be able to save, if you do not have to mail back the disc.
DVD-D has a Wikipedia entry, but I could not find much coverage about this great product. Besides the DVD-D there is also a disposable DVD called EZ-D (info). With the advancement of digital movie delivery the market window for disposable discs is limited - it is now or never.
More details on the DVD-D site. Via Heise (German).
