GPS gadget maker Garmin decided to introduce GPS mobile phones under their own brand with the Garmin nuvifone. TomTom apparently has no such plans according to Digitimes.
TomTom continues rather to focus on the development of core software and further strengthen its in-Car navigation devices.
TomTom is partnering with handset makers to bring their technology to mobile phones. TomTom is currently cooperating with HTC and Asustek for handset navigation solutions in Taiwan.
Garmin's foray into the mobile phone market is risky. I am not sure if that is going to work amidst the tough competition from established vendors and Apple. The nuvifone is expected to hit the market in the third Quarter of this year.
More details on Digitimes.
