Apple will start selling the new iPhone 3G this Friday. There is of course a lot of hype again around the launch of this new iPhone. The hype is by far not as big as it was one year ago when the first iPhone launched. Putting the hype aside, should you really buy an iPhone 3G? Below are several arguments to help make that decision or to help you defend yourself on why you are not standing in front of an AT&T store Friday morning.

1) I already have an iPhone and with the free firmware 2.0 update I get almost all new features the iPhone 3G will have, so why pay more monthly.

2) I am not lucky enough to live in an area with AT&T 3G coverage. As you can see in this AT&T 3G coverage map (the small blue areas are 3G, via the AT&T coverage map page), the chances are like winning in the lottery.


3) I do not want a phone with GPS, because I do not want to have AT&T know where the hell I am.

4) The battery life for voice using 3G networks is weak according to Walt Mossberg, and he should know.

5) The iPhone 3G is no camera phone. I want to take decent photos and record video on my mobile.

5) I can write an email on my BlackBerry under the conference table and present to my boss the latest numbers of my department at the same time. I just cannot feel the keys on a touchscreen phone.

6) I am the T9 texting champion in my clique, a touchscreen keyboard would just kill me.

7) I just do not like AT&T and will not betray my beliefs, even if I really would like to have an iPhone.

8) I just do not like Apple and will not betray my beliefs, even if I really think Microsoft smartphones are ugly except the HTC Touch Diamond and Sony Ericsson XPERIA.

9) I do not own and iPod, so I am not going to get an iPhone because of Apple's restrictive DRM strategy. Nothing runs on the iPhone unless Apple signs it. I prefer the OpenMoko anything goes Linux Phone. (Reason sent in by Michael G.)
