Amazon Kindle sold out again way beyond Christmas

How is it possible that Amazon screws up again on the Kindle supply? If you would order a Kindle ebook reader right now the shipping is estimated to take place in 11-13 weeks, missing December 24th by an eternity.
Is Oprah to blame? She recommended the Kindle back in October and even gave out coupon codes. Was this endorsement too overwhelming for Amazon? In the meantime the rumors about the Kindle 2 have been swirling since early October when some photos leaked.
Last Christmas the Kindle was sold out too, but Amazon had the excuse that they just launched the Kindle and did not fully ramp up production yet. This Holiday season there is no excuse. Amazon messed up here and apparently heavily miscalculated the demand for Kindle. If Amazon cannot handle production of the Kindle than they should think about expanding the platform and license it to other manufacturers. For Amazon anyway the eBook sales should be the revenue driver and not the device.
