Toshiba Launches 512GB SSD

Toshiba announced the largest capacity SSD to date with a massive storage capacity of 512GB. The drive uses a 2.5-inch form factor and is built with 43nm MLC NAND. Other capacities using the same technology are available as well including 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB in 1.8-inch or 2.5-inch form factors.
Toshiba says that the new drives will be sampling in Q1 2009 with mass production in Q2 2009. The drives are aimed at use in notebook computers and use an advanced MLC controllers to achieve higher read/write speeds. The read speed for the drives is 240MB/sec and write speeds are 200MB/sec.
To protect data stored on the SSD AES encryption is offered. Toshiba expects the drives to do well in the market and claims it will own 10% of the notebook SSD market by 2010 and 25% by 2012. Toshiba unveiled its first 128GB SSD last year at CES.
