According to PreCentral Palm said in an investor meeting that there will be no more new Palm OS devices. The company is moving forward with only the new Linux based WebOS and Microsoft Windows Mobile.
I applaud Palm for this move. In a column I wrote over a year ago I called for the demise of all mobile operating systems that have no life on the desktop.
The big advantage of having desktop OS running on your mobile devices is compatibility with your desktop PC at home or notebook on the go.
You get the same user experience, same file formats and same applications.
Another huge factor is the available developer pool for desktop operating systems. There is no need anymore for specialized Blackberry, Palm or Symbian developers.
BlackBerry and Nokia will come to the point very soon to drop their proprietary operating systems. There are only three eco systems that will survive: Linux, Apple OS X, and Windows.
