Freescale has announced the expansion of its netbook offerings with new connectivity and operating system options for netbooks based on its i.MX515 processor. The company entered into the netbook market in January 2009 when it introduced its processor.

The new reference design offered by the firm includes Ubuntu Linux as an operating system choice. The new platform promises up to eight hours of battery life between charges and will sell at competitive price points.

Google's Android OS is also an option along with Xandros, and others. 3G connectivity is supported with technology from Wavecom and Option. An operating system from Phoenix Technologies is also available. The reference design is available now and volume production of the i.MX515 processor is planned for Q2 2009 with netbooks expected to appear based on the system by holiday 2009.
