The Apple iPhone 3.0 Firmware media event is still underway, but I already got the feeling Apple really means to turn the iPhone and the iPod touch into full competitors in the portable video console market.
The Apps demonstrating the new iPhone 3.0 SDK are mostly games.
The new iPhone 3.0 SDK has 1,000 new functions and offers now Bonjour networking, peer-to-peer connectivity, 3rd party hardware accessory support and push notifications.
iPhone games now make it easy to play with your friends over the network or standing next to each other.
With the low prices for games in the App Store Apple could get users into the whole gaming aspect of the iPod and iPhone and then offer higher priced full fledged games as they are available on the Sony PSP and the Nintendo DS consoles.
Follow live coverage of the iPhone 3.0 firmware event on Ars Technica or Engadget.
