Atari has just confirmed that Ghostbusters: The Video game will launch in North American for the PC, Playstation 3, Playstation 2, Wii, and Nintendo DS on June 16, 2009. The PS3 and PS2 versions will launch in Europe on June 19th. There's been no word as to why the game will not be launching for the PC in Europe.
This launch comes on the 25th anniversary of the first movie, and alongside the arrival of the original film on Blu-Ray. The most exciting thing about this game is the fact that Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson (the original Ghostbusters, for those of you who live in holes) will be voicing their characters.
When you combine that with the fact that Ramis and Aykroyd (the original writers) also wrote the game's script, you have a video game that comes as close to Ghostbusters 3 as we are likely to get for a while.
Honestly, that wouldn't be a bad idea to apply to other series. There are a lot of great series out there that never got finished because the originals didn't sell well, or arguments erupted among the cast, or the cast members just started to age too much. It's a lot cheaper to make Ghostbusters: The Video Game than to make Ghostbusters 3: The Movie, and it's also a lot easier to get the actors to agree too.
I hope that more developers start to realize this. I'll take more Firefly however I can get it, and an Indiana Jones video game set back in the 30's, with the original cast members as voice actors, would be just about the best thing in the world. Get on it, Hollywood.
