I love the smell of Apple rumors in the early afternoon. This latest batch comes from SiliconRumors.com, who MacRumors.com considers a fairly reliable source. Here's a summary of what we should expect to see from the MacBook Air in the coming months;
1. A price drop down to between $1300 and $1500. This has lead to some speculation that we'll be seeing a new, smaller model of Air to go with the decreased cost.
2. All new MacBook Airs will start coming with built-in 3G modems, so that users can connect to mobile networks with their MacBooks. (This is kind of fitting; ATT smartphones can't be tethered to laptops to provide 3G access.)
3. Solid State Hard Drives will be put in across the whole MacBook Air line. It's about time, too.
4. There have also been some rumors that Apple will be adding an internal GPS unit to all of the new Airs, but SiliconRumors doesn't think it is very likely.
When you put all of these rumors together (assuming they're true) it's pretty easy to see the reason for these changes to the MacBook Air. Apple wants in on the lucrative netbook market, but they don't want to roll out a whole new product line just yet. The Air is an established notebook, and by making the next generation of Airs slimmer and more mobile they can get in on the netbook craze without going whole-hog from the get-go.
