If you read the troubling news yesterday that AT&T was already sold out of their first batch of iPhones and panicked, we've got some good news for you. While it is apparently true that AT&T stores have already run through their initial stock, Apple appears to have enough to keep going.
You might not be able to pick up an iPhone 3GS from an AT&T store on launch day, but every single Apple pre-order should be shipped to arrive on June 19th. Thankfully for all of the iPhone fans out there, Apple was ready for this launch. The low cost of the 3GS when compared to the 2G iPhone's launch may seem jarring, but it's really just the result of Apple's new business plan.
It's no secret that Cupertino wants a larger share of the smartphone market, and it's also no secret that RIM and Nokia are both way ahead of them in that regard. The reason is the fact that their smartphones are all on multiple carriers. The iPhone is stuck with AT&T for the time being, which means Apple needs to find other ways to put more iPhones in pockets.
The relatively low price of the 3GS, combined with its many features and the Apple App store, should go a long way to achieving that goal. Ditto the $99 iPhone 3G. It's strange that the only low-cost gadgets Apple offers are its smartphones, but I'm not about to complain.
Pre-order your iPhone 3G S now on the Apple Store.
