The Palm Pre is a pretty great phone, but if you own one you're probably already upset at the staggering lack of applications out there. The poor state of the App Catalog is entirely Palm's fault, as they've been keeping the Mojo Software Development Kit (SDK) out of the hands of most developers for a while now.

Apparently Palm is now satisfied with their SDK so they've opened it up to anyone who wants to develop applications for the Pre. This should mean a veritable fountain of new applications for the catalog, news which has got to be music for every Pre-owner's ears.

It'll take a while before they start to filter in though. Palm isn't opening up App submissions until this Fall. Why it's taken them so long to get this all set up is beyond me, but that just goes to very clearly illustrate the fact that (unlike Apple) Palm doesn't take their apps very seriously. If they had, opening the Pre up to developers and pushing new apps would have been a top priority.

I'm not saying Palm's wrong, there's more to a smartphone then just the sum of its apps, but I am saying there's a clear reason why Apple's selling millions of iPhones and Palm's selling tens of thousands of Pres.
