The tech world has been itching to get a look at the CrunchPad for months now. While we won't quite get our wish today, we are getting a detailed look and the upcoming tablet PC's specs thanks to an article in the Singapore Straits Times. The article confirmed that CrunchPad has no onboard memory, and will store all of its data and documents online.

This is definitely a cost and size effective way to make this machine as cheap and as tiny as possible. I'm still not entirely comfortable of the idea of an expensive device that becomes nothing but a brick as soon as you exit WiFi range.

In terms of hardware, the Crunchpad packs a 1.6 Ghz Atom processor with 1 GB of RAM. It has one built-in USB port, so that you can stick in a keyboard or a mousepad, and it has WiFi and 3G capability. The Straits team also confirmed that mobile broadband will be an option for the CrunchPad, which definitely makes me feel a little better about the fact that it is entirely Internet-dependent.

The development team behind the new tablet expects it to launch in November of this year, which will be right in time to head Apple off for the release of the first real tablet PC. After reading these specs, I'm more excited about the CrunchPad than ever. It has a surprising amount of 'oomph' under the hood, definitely enough to justify the (estimated) $400 price tag.
