Is the iPhone 3G Being Phased Out?

We've been hearing rumors for a few days now that an 8GB 3GS iPhone was on its way, destined to be the replacement for the 3G at the $99 price point. Of course, this is extremely exciting news, especially for anyone looking to get a budget smartphone. Selling 3GS's at that low a cost would give Apple even more of an edge than they already have.
Early today, the Rogers carrier's website posted an iPhone comparison that listed the 8GB iPhone 3GS where the 3G would normally be. You can check out a screenshot of the features comparison on AppleInsider. Unfortunately, the slip has already been fixed by Rogers.
All that means is that Rogers is still keeping the upcoming switch under wraps. I would be very surprised to see that Apple WASN'T planning to nix their 3Gs when the last of them sell out and replace them all with new, 8GB 3GS's. The switch is far from confirmed, but the screenshots and rumors that are flooding out of various sources (thanks, BGR!)make it hard to believe that anything else could be possible.
If you're planning on buying a $99 3G now, I'd hold off for a week or two to see what happens. If Rogers announces a change soon, US Carriers won't be too far behind. Of course, if you need your smartphone right now the 3G is a fine device, and $99 is still an extremely fair price to pay for it.
