Reliable US sales statistics for the PS3 Slim aren't available yet, but Yahoo! Tech has the European numbers, courtesy of market-researcher Chart-Track. According to them, the Slim is currently outselling both the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360 by a 3 to 1 ratio. Overall, PS3 sales are up 1000% over the previous week.

Of course, a lot of this is due to the fact that the gap between the PS3 and opposing consoles was much less in the UK than it is in the US. There, they were only behind by around a million units. Here, the gap is nine times larger. The fact that customers held off buying normal PS3s over the last few weeks in anticipation over the Slim also likely contributed to the sharp growth seen.

The Yahoo! Tech report notes that, until the NPD numbers come out here, we won't have any reliable way of knowing just how well the Slim has done in the US. Preliminary numbers from VG Chartz indicate that PS3 sales may have doubled last week as a result of the Slim. Take that information with a grain of salt though; VG Chartz is notoriously unreliable.

Whatever the exact numbers are, it seems likely that the Slim has lead to a substantial improvement in PS3 sales. Whether or not it will be enough to return Sony's gaming division to solvency, or allow them to compete with potential Wii price cuts, remains to be seen.
