The lads at Boy Genius have managed to get their hands on a next-generation Android smartphone running a working version of the 2.0 OS. They've posted a detailed list of screenshots and factoids about how the new update works. Here are a few of the best highlights from 2.0 as I see them.
-Native Exchange and Facebook support are in, and the email inbox has been totally unified.
-The settings tab now gives you the ability to set up more refreshing options. You can set the interval up, so that it isn't refreshing your webpage every time you come back from sleep. You can also set your browser to refresh when the phone is shaken.
-Layers have come to Google Maps. You can set your map to display traffic conditions, satellite images, latitude, transit lines, and even information from Wikipedia. Two-finger tapping to zoom in has also been added.
-BGR says 2.0 brings a ton of additional speed to the browser, which they say is now "ridiculously close" to iPhone 3GS speeds.
-Lots of text to speech improvements. You can set your phone up in 'car mode' so that, while driving, you can give it a voice command like, "Show me gas stations", and your phone will display all stations in your immediate area. That's convenience.
2.0 includes many more goodies, and Google isn't even done with it yet. By the time this update is ready for launch next year, it should be polished to a glossy sheen. I can hardly wait.
