With its 4.3” touchscreen and 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, the HD2 is one of the hottest smartphones on the market. The only issue with the handset is that it runs the widely panned WinMo 6.5 OS. Our hopes were raised earlier this week when we heard that an Android version of the HD2 was headed for Verizon. Unfortunately, it now looks like those rumors were untrue.

In an interview with Forbes, HTC CEO Peter Chou stated that "technically, we could make the HD2 an Android phone, but I have to take care of Windows Mobile."

This isn't an absolute door in the face of those hoping for an Android-run HD 2, but it's a pretty clear statement that such a phone isn't currently in development. Chou did confirm during the interview that his company will have an Android smartphone out for Verizon. The launch date will likely be at some point during the first week in November.

Chou reiterated several times in the interview that it was a company priority to be viewed as a first tier smartphone manufacturer. That is the goal of HTC's new marketing campaign, and the reason that they are sticking with smartphones instead of trying to branch out. Chou was very clear that HTC has no plans to release netbooks, tablets, e-readers, or any other new product types.

There's nothing wrong with refining your style. If HTC can keep making phones as awesome as the HD2, it won't be long before they're accepted as a first tier manufacturer.
