US Congress approved 90 Million Dollars to plan two Transrapid high speed train connections.
The Transrapid train can reach speeds of 310mph.
One Transrapid is for a 56 kilometer track from Las Vegas to the airport (the taxi drivers there will sure love this news). The other is on the east coast, where still three different connections are still competing. Pittsburgh-Greensburg, Baltimore-Washington and Atlanta-Hartsfield Airport compete for a Transrapid connection.
The funding for the planning is spread over three years. Meaning, it will still be a couple of years until a Transrapid is rolling in the United States, but at least the project started.
ThyssenKrupp und Siemens are building the Transrapid. The first and only Transrapid is traveling between Shanghai and the airport there.
More details on N-TV (German). See also the Transrapid USA site.
