So I won my bet, Stanford's Volkswagen Touareg 'Stanley' is the winner of the DARPA Grand Challenge 2005 and takes home the $2 Million price money.

Right after the robot race it was still unclear who won, as the times published where not correct and the driver logs had to be analyst to determine the winner.

The Stanford robot Volkswagen Touareg finished the course in 6 hours 53 minutes. Second place goes to Carnegie Mellon University's Red Team (Hummer) with a time of 7:04:50. Third place is also a Carnegie Mellon University team called Red Team Too (Hummer H1). Their time was 7:14:00.

The VW Touareg 'Stanley' completed the course with an average speed of 19.1 mph.

Stanford started to work in July 2004 on the robot car. Quite amazing to develop the winning vehicle within 1 year (See below about the Technology behind Stanley). Five autonomous vehicles competed the 132 mile desert course.

About the Stanford Stanley Autonomous Vehicle:
'Stanley' is based on a Diesel-powered Volkswagen Touareg R5. seven Pentium M computers do the processing. GPS, a 6DOF inertial measurement unit, and wheel speed for pose estimation are integrated along with four laser range finders, a radar system, a stereo camera pair, and a monocular vision system.
All sensors acquire environment data at rates between 10 and 100 Hertz. Map and pose information are incorporated at 10 Hz.
