Philips Semiconductor announces new AV decoder technology that will be used by Sling Media for a new Slingbox. The new TV placeshift device will be first shown at the CES 2006.
Update 11/02/05:
Sling Media Statement about new Slingbox
The new AV decoders allow Sling Media to bring a single, worldwide product to the market in a streamlined form factor with lower manufacturing costs.
Maybe they should have waited with this announcement until after the holiday shopping season. The current Slingbox is available on
Amazon.com (other stores), but now we know that there is a new
Slingbox coming, smaller, cheaper and better. On the other hand there is always a better version coming after you bought the current one.
More details in this Philips press-release.
We reported about the Slingbox the first time in August 2004.
