Microsoft Planning iPod Killer?

Not even a day after Bill Gates's big "stepping down" announcement, Microsoft is already making more waves, with a news story yesterday about the company's plans to roll out a new music downloading software and line of MP3 players that can link to the software.
Of course, Microsoft is not a stranger to the MP3 player world. Their PlaysForSure platform is the foundation for multiple MP3 players (example).
Obviously Microsoft can't stand the idea of Apple doing something better than them and they're finally really working on a way to take a stand against the iPod/iTunes. Though, it will take a marketing genius to create a level of buzz anywhere near that of Apple.
