There's a research lab in Toronto called Dynamic Graphics Project, and they've come out with a prototype of a radical new computer desktop interface. The idea is to make it more like what you would find on a real desk.
Specifically, desktop icons become virtual sheets of paper. It turns the typical 2D plane and turns it into a three-dimensional desk. You can arrange icons any way you want -- in organized piles, unorganized stacks, and anything in between. You can even "hang" them on the surrounding wall above the desk.
This interface looks very interesting. However, I'm a little scared about my computer's desktop looking like my real-life desk. Maybe that's one thing that's better left unrealistic in the virtual world. Still, I think this is the direction that desktop interfaces will be heading in the next few years.
You can watch a demo video on YouTube, or download a high-res version on BumpTop's site.
