Microsoft-branded MP3 players have been rumored about for quite a while now, but it wasn't until just recently that we got an "official name" of what may be MS's long-awaited challenger, even though that hadn't been confirmed. Well now, Microsoft has finally stepped forward and said that, yes, the Zune is an official project that they're working on.

Microsoft Release Zune Details!
Here's a quote:
"Today we confirmed a new music and entertainment project called Zune. Under the Zune brand, we will deliver a family of hardware and software products, the first of which will be available this year. We see a great opportunity to bring together technology and community to allow consumers to explore and discover music together."
So the Zune is not just a solitary player, but a completely new brand name, just like the iPod. According to Billboard Magazine, Zune-branded video players will be soon to follow, and possibly even a portable video game device. There'll also be WiFi-enabled devices, and Microsoft reportedly plans to use that for things like social networking, music purchasing on-the-go, and even an Xbox Live-esque service, though none of these is officially confirmed by Microsoft as of yet.
You can be sure that we'll be following the Zune story very closely, and will post any new details the instant we receive them. See also the weird Microsoft Zune Teaser site called 'Coming Zune'.
