The battery life is considerably shorter on portable devices when watching video. Toshiba devised a new playback method that apparently uses considerably less power.
The technology involves a modified version of the interlace method used when displaying still images on a LCD screen. The LCD panel's drive circuitry uses 30% less power, resulting in several % longer battery life when deployed on a notebook.
The technology is still in the distant future. Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co. would commercialize the new power saving video playback in LCD panels in 2-3 years.
