Segway announced today that the NYPD has purchased a fleet of ten Segway Personal Transporters. The model purchased is the Segway i2 Police units and the intent is to field the Segway's in Central Park, Coney Island and other city parks and beaches.
"We are honored to count the NYPD as users of our latest police technology," said Jim Norrod, chief executive officer for Segway Inc. "The i2 Police units will help the city save on fuel costs and enable patrol officers to provide a higher level of security in many of the city's busiest areas."
Segway has sold their Personal Transporters to more than 400 police and security agencies world wide. Some of the benefits of the Segway system are no emissions, police officers stand eight inches taller on the Segway PT allowing them to see over crowds and cars and the Segway PT can go in and out doors.
The i2 Police units purchased by the NYPD have a top speed of 12.5 miles per hour; can carry 260 pounds, and a maximum range of up to 24 miles. Segway PT police package adds a handle bar bag, accessory bar for lights and sirens, reflective police labels, comfort mats, LED taillight and cargo frames. The MSRP for the package is $5660. I wonder if it comes with a trailer hitch for one of those trailers you see people carry their kids for rides in so the police and cart people off to the slammer. Story and image via Segway.
