SDHC cards look just like every other SD card on the market; they use the same design and form factor, but are not compatible with devices designed for SD cards including cameras, PDAs, and card readers. Today we are going to test the OCZ Class 6 8GB SDHC Memory Card for performance in a media card reader and in a Nikon D80 DSLR camera.

Like all SDHC cards, the OCZ Class 6 8GB SDHC Memory Card measures in at 32 x 24 x 2.1mm and the card has a 6MB/s write speed. OCZ also makes several other SDHC cards including a class 6 4GB SDHC, a class 4 8GB SDHC, and a class 4 8GB SDHC memory card.

Benchmarks & Testing
For benchmarking the OCZ Class 6 8GB SDHC Memory Card I used HD Tach to check read and write speeds. HD Tach showed an average read speed of 15.4 MB/s and an average write speed of 11.3 MB/s in a SanDisk 12-in-1 card reader. I also used Sandra XII’s removable storage benchmark while the OCZ Class 6 8GB SDHC Memory Card was in the SanDisk card reader and the card showed 1042 ops/minute along with an endurance factor of 30.00.

The real testing of the card was actually done while taking digital photos. The size of this card is great; the Nikon D80 I use has a 10.2MP CCD. The camera shows that at full resolution the card will hold 1000 images, change the resolution to normal and it will hold 2000 images. Turn the D80 image quality down to basic and you can store a whopping 4000 images on the OCZ Class 6 8GB SDHC Memory Card. On the other end of the scale if you store both a RAW and a fine quality JPEG of each image you shoot the OCZ Class 6 8GB SDHC Memory Card will store 439 individual shots, RAW and normal res JPEG will hold 524, RAW and basic JPEG will get you 580 shots, and RAW alone will get 656 shots on the OCZ Class 6 8GB SDHC Memory Card.

The write speed on the card is fast enough that I can shoot continual bursts with the D80 at fine resolution until the card fills up. Once the buffer fills up the shots slow down a bit, but the D80 was still able to shoot a bit more than one image per second after 30 shots. The card is covered by a 3-year warranty as well. In all the OCZ Class 6 8GB SDHC Memory Card performed flawlessly and holds lots of images making it the perfect memory card for high resolution digital cameras compatible with SDHC memory. You would burn through two batteries before your memory card filled up. The write speed is plenty fast for burst shooting non-stop.
