Features, Specifications & Design
Oakley’s Gascan sunglasses are one of the best looking designs Oakley has to many guys out there. The Oakley Artist Series of Gascan glasses are custom designed by each artist, in this Case the legendary car designer Chip Foose. The Foose design takes the normal Gascan and gives them a very attractive aluminum design. It’s a bit confusing when you see the shades on the Oakley website since they say the color is aluminum and the glasses look like they are in fact clad in aluminum.

However, when my review pair turned up the shades are actually painted in an aluminum looking design. It looks just like brushed aluminum, but if you are expecting real metal you are out of luck. These glasses were originally available in two different styles that each looked identical. The only difference was that one was a limited edition numbered run and the other was not numbered. The numbered sets are now sold out, but the non-numbered sets are still available. Both the numbered and the non-numbered chip Foose Gascan sunglasses carried the same $160 MSRP.

The back of the frames aren’t painted in the aluminum looking finish like the fronts. The backside that sits against your face is done in an attractive green finish and is emblazoned with the Foose logo and the non-numbered sets are stamped with a large black “P-32”. The P-32 pays homage to the Hot Ron Lincoln Foose built that was dubbed the P-32 Street Fighter. The famous Oakley “O” is in a shade of orange that would pass muster on any University of Texas campus. The lenses are dark gray according to Oakley, but almost seem to have a green tint to my eyes. This is likely thanks to the green on the inside of the frames.

Unlike the previous Oakley shades I looked at that come with a hard case for storage, the Chip Foose Gascan’s only come with a custom designed Oakley MICROCLEAR bag for storage and cleaning. Te bag is green colored and has black artwork on the outside. On the front of the left lens in the bottom corner Oakley laser etched “Chip”. The first time I put the glasses on I thought the laser etching was a smudge when I saw it in my peripheral vision. After wearing the glasses for a bit of time, I don’t notice the etching at all. The lenses are perfectly colored, not too dark and not too light for my tastes and are crystal clear with no distortion while wearing.

Foose Gascan’s in Use
I have worn the Chip Foose Gascan sunglasses for several weeks now for several hours at a time. The shades are very comfortable to wear. The fames are very lightweight and you really can’t tell you are wearing them after a while. The design of the Gascan frames isn’t as tight fitting as the Oakley Radar glasses I reviewed in the summer. The Gascan's can slip off when you bend over if you aren’t careful. One problem I have had with sunglasses before is excess pressure over the top and behind the ears as well as on the bridge of my nose. This was not an issue with the Chip Foose Gascan.

If you or someone you are shopping for is tired of plain black or solid colored sunglasses, the Chip Foose Gascan shades may be exactly what they would want. The Foose Gascan's are a very unique set of sunglasses that look fantastic, offer great comfort during wear and do a great job blocking the sun from your eyes.
