The new 3D display will be unveiled this week on October 22nd at the Digital Content Expo 2009 in Tokyo.
The Sony 360 degree 3D display has a diameter of 130mm and is 270mm tall. The resolution of the LED display is only 96x128 pixels, but has 24-bit color depth. Read more

The 10-inch VGA resolution 3D display does not require glasses and uses 16 projectors to create the 3D effect.
TechOn (via 3d-display-info) calls this technology "Full Parallax 3D TV" and it uses the method of Integral Photography with Overlaid Projection to achieve a 3D image that differs depending on the viewers position. Read more

Samsung claims that their new 240Hz 3D TV enabling a more natural stereoscopic effect with the shutter glasses viewers need to wear. This new Samsung 3D TV is still a prototype.

In the same announcement Samsung talks about a 52-inch 3D screen that as far as I interpret the Google translation is an autostereo display that would not require any glasses to experience the 3D effect. Read more

As more people get used to viewing, 3D content on the big screen there is more of a demand for 3D content in the home.

The setup used a 103-inch Plasma. Today Panasonic announced the development of a 50-inch Full HD 3D compatible plasma display panel (PDP) and high-precision active shutter glasses that enable the viewing of theater-quality, true-to-life 3D images in the living rooms.

A 50-inch 3D TV is of course more feasible to actually become affordable and sellable. Panasonic plans to release their new 50-inch 3D Plasma TV in 2010. Read more

Gucci 3D Glasses Coming Says RealD Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review 3D movies are supposed to make going to the cinema an exciting event again. Since upgrading a digital cinema to 3D is not that expensive they are mushrooming all over the place.
Going to the movies is also a social event though, and for lots of people wearing the normal realD 3D glasses is an awful experience as they feel they look stupid.
Well this could soon be over. According to Variety (via 3Ddisplayinfo and Worstpreviews) a RealD executive said that designer 3D glasses are coming to select stores before the December launch of the movie Avatar including Gucci 3D glasses. RealD is the company behind most 3D movies. The first RealD 3D movie was Chicken Little back in 2005. I saw that back then and I still own the custom Chicken Little 3D Glasses - wearing these definitely made me look stupid.

The projector promises a flicker free 3D image thanks to an Xpol polarizing filter that is battery-free and passive. The LCD is 1.5-inches thick and measures 46-inches diagonally.

The screen is compatible with line-by-line and side-by-side 3D video formats. Information for the left and right eye is constantly displayed on the screen so strobbing glasses are not needed. The LCD includes two pairs of battery-free light polarizing glasses. Read more

Okay, so Sony's confirmed that they're bringing 3D to all PlayStation games in 2010. (Engadget) Meanwhile, over at IFA 2009, 3D technology is also making lots of noise. Panasonic has a prototype (StuffTV) for a 3D player and augmented-reality system, and Sony is getting ready to unveil a series of Dolby Real 3D DVD players.

It looks like we're heading straight for a 3D revolution. Both Sony and Panasonic are getting ready to throw a lot of money behind new lines of 3D players. The technology has finally advanced far enough to be practical for mainstream adoption, and people seem pretty psyched for the chance to watch 3D movies and play 3D games on their own television. As the early adopters here, Panasonic and Sony stand to make a lot of money when 3D takes off.

The BDR says that it is working with major movie studios, IT, and consumer electronics companies to devise a standard for 3D Blu-ray films.

By coming up with a set standard the BDR can ensure a set level of quality for Blu-ray films across the platform. The specification will require the delivery of 1080p resolution to each eye and backwards compatibility with discs and players. This will require all 3D discs to also include a 2D version of the film. Read more
