Olympics 2008 in 3D on Google Earth
Google announced several services for the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing including detailed 3D models of the Olympic venues in China.
Google also recently updated satellite imagery in Beijing and have added detailed bilingual maps in China.
A special Google map shows the medals won for each country. To access all Google Olympics services you can visit the Google 2008 Summer Games page.

3Dconnexion Survey Shows Productivity Improvements with its Products
3Dconnexion makes a line of 3D mice including desktop and portable versions. The mice are intended to improve productivity in design work but can be used for other things like Second Life as well. 3Dconnexion commissioned a study to see how well its mice improve productivity in CAD design.
The study titled The Economic Payback of 3D Mice for CAD Design in Engineers found that 80% of respondents who used the 3D mouse say they are drastically more productive. Most of the study respondents said they noticed a difference in the first week of use. Nearly 50% of respondents said that productivity increased by 20% or more with the 3Dconnexion mouse. Read more

New 3D Xbox Interface combines Apple Cover Flow with Nintendo Miis
Microsoft just announced at the E3 2008 briefing a completely new interface for the Xbox 360 coming this fall. The first thing that comes to mind when you see the first screen is Apple Coverflow mixed with Nintendo Mii avatars with a little bit 3D.
The new Xbox 360 interface looks clean and by being able to kick off the avatar community with about 12 million users will give Microsoft an edge.

Google Lively 3D World launched
Google launches a 3D World dubbed Google Lively.
Google Lively lets you chat with your friends or meet new contacts online in rooms you can create and decorate. Additionally you can personalize your surroundings with an ever-growing catalog of avatars, outfits, furniture, and rooms.
The Lively client requires Windows Vista/XP with Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Mitsubishi partners with NVIDIA and Aspen Media to bring 3D into the Living Room
Mitsubishi announced new partnerships with NVIDIA Corp. and Aspen Media Products, creating a combined capability to bring 3D content to home entertainment.
Mitsubishi’s entire product line of Home Theater TVs feature 3D-ready technology and the new solution from NVIDIA and Aspen will play back 2D and 3D content.
It can also convert 2D PC games to 3D.

projectiondesign unveiled the F10 AS3D single-chip DLP Projector at the InfoComm 2008, which is the only portable high resolution active 3D stereoscopic projector on the market.
The projectiondesign F10 AS3D enables full 3D stereoscopic visualization from a small, single lens chassis, and at full 120 Hz refresh rates commonly used in stereoscopic systems.

Xbox Live 3D Avatars coming this Fall?
Information about Microsoft working on 3D avatars for their Xbox Live platform leaked. The image and some description of the Xbox Avatars was found on a survey site.
The Wii with its Mii characters has had 3D characters that players can customize and associate with from the get go.
The Xbox characters are supposed to also be highly customizable and also playable in various games.

Philips Introduces 52-inch 3D Display
Philips has introduced a new 52-inch 3D display that is designed for digital signage, pro-Av and entertainment applications. The display uses Philips’ WOWvx technology to allow 3D viewing without the need for glasses.
The 52-inch auto-stereoscopic display is based on a full 1080p HD panel with 700 cd/m2 of brightness, 2000:1 contrast ratio and a response time of 8 ms. Philips says that the display will be available in Q4 2008. Pricing is not available at this time. Read more

3D Earth on the iPhone
Earthscape is developing a virtual globe application with social layers so that in the future they will be able to offer the world's richest geographic browsing experience.
At the Where 2.0 conference Earthscape showed their 3D earth on an Apple iPhone. The demo is already pretty impressive and has the appeal of Google Earth on the PC.
Wayfinder already developed a 3D Globe navigation for mobile phones dubbed Wayfinder Earth in 2006. I'm not sure whatever happened to it. It is still in beta.

3Dconnexion announced today that it has gone mobile with its SpaceNavigator mouse. The new SpaceNavigator for notebooks is designed for on-the-go 3D professionals and enthusiasts. Compared to the desktop SpaceNavigator the notebook version is more compact and about half the weight.
"As the notebook market continues to grow and more and more people carry their laptops with them, there is a greater need for advanced mobile input devices," said Dieter Neujahr, president of 3Dconnexion. Second Life to Get 3Dconnexion 3D mice Compatibility
Logitech owned 3Dconnexion announced today that its 3D mouse product line that includes the SpaceNavigator will be supported by Second Life starting in mid-April. The 3D mouse is going to offer better control and coordination with 3D objects in the game.
The 3D mouse promises to make things in the Second Life world more effortless and intuitive by making things like flying and moving easier. The mouse will also allow Second Lifers to build more easily as well according to 3Dconnexion. Read more

IBM and Linden Lab bring Enterprise Apps to the 3D World of Second Life
IBM and Linden Lab, creator of the virtual world Second Life, today announced the two companies are exploring the development of enterprise solutions for security-rich, custom virtual world creation and collaboration on the Second Life Grid platform.
At the Virtual Worlds 2008 conference (takes place in New York this week), they will demonstrate hosting regions of the Second Life Grid behind IBM’s firewall that will combine the operational scale and security of IBM’s BladeCenter with Second Life’s dynamic content creation tools and vibrant user community.

Christie Announces New 3D Projector
When Beowulf hit theaters my local cinema was showing the film in 3D on a Christie projector and the 3D effects were fantastic. Christie announced recently that it has a new 3D projector called the 3D2P that carries a lower cost to help get 3D equipment into more theaters.
The 3D2P uses two Christie DLP cinema projectors offering twice the brightness on any screen size. "This is an exciting new offering from Christie," says Brian Claypool senior product manager, Entertainment Solutions. "Not only does it provide the exhibitor with great flexibility, it also allows exhibitors to own the complete 3D system without recurring fees. It provides significant cost savings not available through systems requiring long-term licensing arrangements." Read more

Xbox 3D Virtual World necessary to compete with Playstation Home?
We reported earlier today about Sony Playstation Home that will launch some time in 2008. If Sony does everything right it will be huge for the Sony PS3. I actually think Microsoft cannot afford to not launch a similar 3D virtual world for the Xbox 360.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 is loosing more and more coolness points. It all started with not having HDMI on the first generation of Xbox 360 consoles. Because Microsoft chose not to integrate a high definition drive inside the Xbox they came out with an HD DVD drive, which is now worthless as HD DVD died last week.
