Archos announced this week their new 6th generation of portable media players. The new Archos 5, 5g and 7 series are awesome portable machines that offer Wi-fi or even 3G connectivity (5g). We picked the new Archos 5 with the gigantic 250GB hard-drive as one of our Top 100 Holiday Gift Tips of 2008. Why? Show me another portable media player with 250GB storage. Apple is not offering an iPod with that kind of capacity, Sandisk and Microsoft also fail to offer 250GB in a player. Archos goes even bigger on the Archos 7 with 320GB, but a 7 inch PMP is already very big for a portable without having to use a bag. Read more

Archos 5g, Archos 5 and Archos 7 launched

The 6th generation of Archos PMP has been unveiled on the Archos web site.
The PMP include the Archos 5, Archo 5g and the Archos 7 series.
The ARCHOS 5 will be available in 60GB, 120GB and 250GB storage configurations and features a 5 inch screen. The 5 inch screen has a 800x480px resolution. The Archos 5 features Wifi connectivity and has a full web browser available.

The ARCHOS 5g is the anticipated 3G enabled PMP. The Archos 5g features 3.5G connectivity and a 30GB HDD. Read more

Archos to integrate 3G Connectivity in PMPs

Archos signed an agreement with French carrier SFR to integrate 3G connectivity into upcoming portable media players.

The 3G enabled Archos PMPs are supposed to be available some time this year.

Details about the collaboration between Archos and SFR are not available; the companies only issued a statement about the collaboration on 3G enabled media devices. Read more

The new low-end Archos 105 is supposed to ship tomorrow from Amazon.com.

For $89.99 you get a 2GB iPod nano alternative with 1.8 inch color OLED display and video playback measuring 3.3 by 1.8 by 0.3 inches.
An iPod nano measures 3.5 by 1.6 by 0.26 inch.

Archos Introduces the Archos 605 WiFi

Moments ago, Archos introduced their fifth generation of PMP devices with the Archos 605 WiFi. This new PMP allows you to play all sorts of digital entertainment files in the form of movies, TV shows, photos, and music. You can also use it to record your favorite shows directly to the 605 WiFi.

The screen is a massive 4.3” touch screen with an 800 x 480-screen resolution with 16 million colors. WiFi allows you to connect to the Internet and surf, share content and access video sites like DailyMotion.

Customization is possible with availability of accessories and plug-ins for the 605 WiFi. You can zoom in on photos stored on the internal storage and make photo slide shows that can be viewed on the device or your TV. Storage capacities are 30GB, 80GB, and 160GB. Archos 605 Wifi officially announced

The leaked details are still very few and do not allow for a complete picture of the capabilities of the new generation of Archos PMPs.
Archos had a spec page briefly on their site and French site GenerationMP3 of course saw it and published a screen shot. They since removed it by request of Archos. Why some companies still do not get a staging server for their website is a mystery to me. Read more
