Microsoft: AMOLED Displays Are The Future

Microsoft: AMOLED Displays Are The Future Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Okay, so Microsoft didn't actually say that outright. Actions speak louder than words though, and Microsoft's actions with Windows Phone 7 speak to high hopes for the future ubiquity of OLED-based displays. PocketNow reports that Windows Phone 7 engineers chose black and white backgrounds for a very specific reason.

Black backgrounds draw less power on an AMOLED screen, and white backgrounds work better for emails and improve text readability. Microsoft knows that OLED/AMOLED technology will be the future of phone displays. It has already started to gain quite a bit of popularity, and that will only continue over the next few years.

iPhone 2010 Super AMOLED Display Rumors Heat Up

iPhone 2010 Super AMOLED Display Rumors Heat Up Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

RUMORS! HEARSAY! SPECULATION! Yes, this article has it all. In my interview with Aaron Vronko we touched briefly on the possibility that the new iPhone would pack a Super AMOLED screen. This new display technology (developed by Samsung) would give Apple a head's up on their plain-old AMOLED-packing competitors, like the Nexus One.

Now articles have popped up on Gadget Venue and PMP Today discussing rumors of a Super AMOLED screen for the new iPhone. I traced the rumors back to their source at OLED display.net, who claims to have heard from OLED industry sources that Apple is very interested in Samsung's technology.

OCZ Sabre OLED Gaming Keyboard Review

Topic:

OCZ Sabre OLED Gaming Keyboard Review Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Ocmodshop published an OCZ Sabre OLED Gaming Keyboard Review.

Quote from review: “Do you remember that complicated programs used to come with "keyboard overlays". I remember the old WordPerfect function key overlays, which were really more of a reference-sheet than a quick guide. Complex games with lots of functions (like MMOs) had keyboard overlays, and some keyboards like the Z-board had custom skins for popular games. If you could change the key to be an icon then there would be no need to memorize which command corresponded to which key.

Entering the customizble keyboard scene is OCZ with their OLED Gaming keyboard. While it can't change hard-coded letter keys, it does combine the best of both worlds by combining a standard gaming keyboard with a customizable OLED keypad. Using such a keypad allows you to dynamically update the key label on-the-fly depending on the application or game you're running.” Read more

Samsung Makes AMOLED With Built-In Touchscreen

Topic:

Samsung Makes AMOLED With Built-In Touchscreen Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Samsung has made a major breakthrough in OLED technology. Electronista reports that the company has just announced that it can now mass-produce the world's first active matrix OLED screens with built-in touch functions. Normally, touch is added to an OLED/AMOLED screen by putting a second touch input layer on top of the original screen. This obscures the image somewhat, dimming it a bit and stopping users from getting a perfect picture.

Now Samsung knows how to add touch sensors to each of the organic cells in the AMOLED screen. It adds a tiny amount of thickness to the screen, but does not require a second layer equipped with sensors in order to work. The first 3.3" screens to make use of this technology should be in full production by March. Impressive!

Cowon J3: A 3.3'' AMOLED PMP? Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review

Some day soon, OLED screens will be the standard. Every device that launches will pack one and there will be nothing at all exciting about its inclusion in a gadget. Today, though, OLED is still novel enough to make otherwise pedestrian products seem exciting. Take the Cowon J3 (Player Bites). This PMP is said to feature a 3.3" AMOLED screen, WiFi, 4/8/15 GB storage capacities, and an in-built DMB tuner.

Apple To Sell LCD & OLED Versions of iSlate?

Topic:

Apple To Sell LCD & OLED Versions of iSlate? Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review We reported earlier on this rumor from an unknown product developer. This designer heard that Apple is buying up all of the 10" LCD and OLED screens they can nab. The designer's employer was looking for 10" screens for a project, but was told by Asian suppliers that Apple had pre-ordered all of them.

If Apple is pre-ordering 10" LCD and OLED screens, I can't imagine what they'd be for other than a tablet. That said, the inclusion of OLED screens in this rumor fills me with a fair amount of doubt. A tablet with a 10" OLED screen would be heinously expensive, there's no way Apple could bring it to market for much under $1000. It just seems ludicrous that they would try to push a product that expensive in the middle of a recession like this. Sure, some folks will buy it. But where is the mass appeal?

myGOtv with 3.4-inch AMOLED Screen Debuts

Topic:

myGOtv with 3.4-inch AMOLED Screen Debuts Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review I can see the appeal of a portable TV when you are out on the go. You could watch TV while riding the bus or train to work each day or when sitting waiting for an appointment you could watch some TV. I'm not sure that a dedicated device is the way most of us would prefer to watch TV; I would rather see it integrated into my iPhone.

Still, if a dedicated portable TV device floats your boat the 3.4-inch AMOLED Pocket digital TV model DHT234D from MyGoTV is debuting at CES this week. The device has an AMOLED display and can play for 2.5 hours continuously. The set picks up free OTA DTYV signals and NTSC RF channels 2-69. Topic:

The HTC Legend: Budget Android AMOLED Smartphone Technology News, Electronics Buy Guide and Gadget Review Once of the smartphones leaked in HTC's 2010 line-up was the Legend. While most follow-up coverage has focused on the Bravo and the HTC Passion (aka Nexus One), we're now starting to learn a little more about the other phones on that list. The Legend doesn't have quite as much flash or flair as the Bravo or Passion but if the ai.rs blog is correct (via Android and Me) it's still going to be a hot budget device.
