Microsoft to stick with Licensing Fees for Windows Mobile

OSLO (Reuters) - Microsoft plans to continue charging licensing fees from
handset makers for using its mobile operating system and not follow the free
offerings of Google and Nokia, Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said on Tuesday.
The pressure on Microsoft's high licensing fees has increased over 2008 with
Google rolling out free Android technology and Nokia offering to buy out others
from Symbian and also make its software royalty-free.

Motorola Moto Q Global with Windows Mobile 6.1 Available
Motorola and AT&T have announced that the Moto Q Global is now available at AT&T running on the new Windows Mobile 6.1 Global. The new Q will operate on cellular networks across the world.
The new handset features GPS and is compatible with AT&T Navigator. The new Windows Mobile 6.1 OS provides users with applications for working on the go and access to files and other information on the go that is on a corporate network. The new OS supports encryption, remote admin, information rights management and the ability to send and receive encrypted email. The handset is available for $149.99 with a 2-year contract. Read more

Morodo Announces MO-Call for Windows Mobile Devices
Last week Morodo made the announcement that it had released a version of its MO-Call software for the Apple iPhone. MO-Call allows two users to place phone calls over a mobile phones web browser at a discounted calling rate compared to normal charges.
Morodo says that the Windows Mobile version allows mobile users with devices from Asus, HP, HTC, Motorola, O2, Orange, Palm and more to save up to 90% on international calls using its software. Both parties have to be using the MO-Call software to make and receive calls. Read more

Microsoft sees higher Windows Mobile unit sales
TAIPEI (Reuters) - Microsoft said on Tuesday it expects global unit sales of its
Windows Mobile software for cellphones to grow at least 50 percent per year in
fiscal years 2008 and 2009.
Eddie Wu, the software company's managing director of OEM embedded devices Asia,
offered the forecast to Reuters on the sidelines of a briefing.

EA Mobile Titles Now Available on BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile Smartp
EA Mobile, a division of EA’s Casual Entertainment Label, today announced that many of its most popular games are now available for smartphones, including BlackBerry smartphones, Symbian and Windows Mobile phones.
EA Mobile will distribute a growing slate of smartphone games, including hit titles like Tetris and Bejeweled. EA is demonstrating the smartphone games at the Symbian booth at the CTIA 2008 show in Las Vegas.

MSN Direct on Windows Mobile-based Devices official
We already reported that Microsoft would launch MSN Direct for Windows Mobile phones. Now MS has released the official details.
"This is the first time MSN Direct content has been made available to mobile phones, and it is a strong next step for the delivery of MSN Direct content where customers have said they need it the most," said Eric Lang, general manager of the MSN Direct initiative at Microsoft. "We are excited about the opportunities this new application will bring to mobile operators, consumers and the industry."

Microsoft to announce MSN Direct for Windows Mobile at MWC 2008
MSN Direct? Is that still working? Apparently yes. In 2003 Microsoft launched watches (SPOT) that received up to date weather and other info. Now Microsoft is supposed to announce at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona the availability of MSN Direct on Windows Mobile.
A downloadable application would allow receiving MSN Direct via Internet on Windows Mobile enabled devices.

Virtual BlackBerry for Windows Mobile 6 Devices
Research in Motion (RIM) announced this week a Virtual Blackberry application suite for Windows Mobile 6 devices.
The software will provide users with a virtual BlackBerry application experience, including support for BlackBerry email, phone, calendar, address book, tasks, memos, browser, instant messaging and other applications developed for the BlackBerry platform.
Devices running the BlackBerry application suite will be able to connect to BlackBerry services via BlackBerry Enterprise Server as well as BlackBerry Internet Service.

Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 Smartphone Software Revealed at 3GSM 2007
Now Microsoft officially announced the new Windows Mobile 6 version. The new Microsoft smartphone OS did already leak a couple of days ago, but now all the official information about the update is available.
This is not a mind blowing new release and rather a solid update with lots of improvements and Windows Vista support.
New features in Windows Mobile 6 include rich HTML e-mail, increased functionality within Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile and Office Mobile programs, and improved security and device management for IT managers.

Microsoft Sells 500,000 Windows Mobile OSes in Single Deal
Microsoft landed its biggest deal for Windows Mobile with the U.S. Census Bureau. The deal covers 500,000 handsets.
The U.S. Census Bureau will use the Windows handset in the 2010 Census. It is not known what the dollar value of the deal is and which company the handsets provides.

The World's Smallest Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone Features WiFi - Axia A308
Somehow today mobile phone companies decided to announce new phones. I thought today will be just about what Apple is going to announce.
Fifth Media announced today the AXIA A308 PDA Phone. The Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone is making its debut at the CeBit 2006 next week.
The quad-band smartphone (GSM, GPRS and EDGE) also features Wifi connectivity.
So now how big is the World's smallest Windows Mobile 5.0 phone? It measures 20.8x48.8x113.3mm and weighs 128g. This is really small for a Windows Mobile smartphone.

Microsoft is finally at the point to compete with RIM's Blackberry. Today at the 3GSM they announced support for direct push email and support by several carriers.
Leveraging the integration between Direct Push technology in Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), businesses can give their employees push email without the requirement to pay for additional and costly e-mail servers.
Cingular Wireless, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone today announced free upgrades to the Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) for all their Windows Mobile 5.0 customers, enabling Direct Push functionality and providing enhanced device management and security for messaging applications. Palm Inc. and i-Mate also reaffirmed their commitment to free MSFP upgrades.
Newly introduced Windows smartphones with direct push email support include the HP iPAQ hw6900 Mobile Messenger (photo), the Gigabyte Communications g-Smart (offered by Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd. in Taiwan), the ASUS P305 3G-enabled smartphone, and the Fujitsu Siemens FS Pocket Loox. HTC will also ship new smart phones in Q2 2006.

Sharp WS003SH Windows Mobile 5.0 QUERTY PocketPC Phone
Japanese mobile provider Willcom announces the Sharp W-ZERO3 or WS003SH named PocketPC phone with a full QUERTY keyboard.
The keyboard slides out to the side under the screen. The Sharp WS003SH has a 3.7 inch screen, Intel PXA270 CPU, 128MB Flash 64MB SDRAM and runs Windows Mobile 5.0, a first for Sharp. Sharp's Zaurus PDAs ran Linux so far.

Taiwanese MiTAC offers Windows Mobile 5.0 Smart phones with full GPS navigation software known from the Mio Navigation PDAs.
