The doctor at Planned Parenthood enters the room and says abruptly, "Hello, Don." Her patient, Donna Stern, hesitates to correct her. But she can't keep it in, and she laughs and then says, "It's actually Don-na." The scene in Obvious Child, which is out today in New York and Los Angeles, shows the recently pregnant, Brooklyn twenty-something Stern to be, in actress Jenny Slate's interpr ...

Best to be avoided by pro-lifers
Obvious Child will carry the label of being “that abortion comedy.” Pro-lifers will hate it because of the subject matter. Pro-choicers probably won’t go for the idea of the topic of abortion being the center issue of a comedy. Come on, people. Get your collective heads out of the sand and realize this isn’t the first time the topic has been broached in comedies. While the females of Jason Reitman’s Juno and Judd Apa ...

Jenny Slate, the former Saturday Night Live star and creator of popular video, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, is having a breakout moment. As stand-up comedian Donna Stern in Obvious Child, Slate’s character bounces back from heartache the way every modern woman does: by meeting a nice, young gentleman at a bar. What comes next is worth the ticket price — and the subject of a recent censorship debate — but her initial contact wi ...

(Obvious Child opens at the Guild 45th today. You should also read Alison Hallett's review, because it's really good.)
Life is like a box of Jenny Slate: You're probably going to hear some pee and poop jokes.
I can think of a ton of comedies that skirted over abortion as a topic—Juno, Knocked Up, Junior—in order to make way for the pregnancy gags. So it's a pleasant change to watch Obvious Child, the first romantic comedy I can thin ...

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — There are obvious merits on display in Obvious Child, but they’re just not enough to make it the truth-telling pleasure it clearly wants to be.
(2 stars out of 4)
Debuting writer-director Gillian Robespierre based her romantic comedy-drama on a short film (23 minutes) with the same title that she wrote, produced, and directed in 2009. But in fleshing it out to a nearly-four-times-as-long feature, Robespierre can’t hi ...

Obvious Child is being widely described as an "abortion comedy"—a catchy, if inadequate, designation. The movie (directed and co-written by Gillian Robespierre, and starring Saturday Night Live alum Jenny Slate) does involve abortion and funny jokes, many of which are about abortion and farting, among other topics. But Obvious Child is much more than the "abortion comedy" designation might lead you to believe.
"We were confident that our take on this story was tho ...
