Alternatives to the iPod and other “celebrated” MP3 flash players out there? Yep, you found it. Truly has managed to come up with a fashionable, little, sleek and feature packed unit to have you be unique and “stand out in the crowd”. I don’t know about you, but I enjoy having and being different than everyone else AND possess true quality when I do it. This player manages to suffice for all my needs in a flash player and more. Yes, it’s rectangular and it’s black. So what? Does everything have to be white now? Color and size variation are great, and will suit your changing personality, yet be svelte and distinguished too. This player has so many features; you won’t have time or want anything else in your pocket or on your arm/waist.

Start with the 1.8” LCD and LED backlit screen providing 64,000 colors for easy digital viewing. A full 1GB of onboard flash memory with the ability to store up to 250 songs (nine hours) or about 2,500 photos (JPEG/BMP/LGO) is also waiting for you. Need more? How about an SD slot allowing up to an additional 1GB of memory? Access all of your music, photos, data and more from that SD card along with an FM radio, one-touch voice recording, eBook capability and even games! Set that particular sound you want with six different equalizer modes (Classic, live, pop, rock, bass or X-EQ) and so in three different languages (English, Spanish and traditional Chinese).

Startup was quick and the menu screen clearly identifies what you’re looking for. The menu has eight distinctive folders (music, recording, radio, games, e-book, photo browser, system setup and memory management). Up/downloading in all categories was consistent at 500 kbps and seamless. MP3 and WMA files stored easily under the audio portion of the music folder. The clever directional toggle switch moved effortlessly amongst folders and files as well. I utilized ear buds and head phones for all audio testing and although headphones clearly delivered crisp, distortion-free sound with great bass; the ear buds showcased excellent audio clarity too. Volume adjustment was quick and responsive with just a flick of the toggle vertically. Recorded voice clips were surprisingly refreshing with no audible breakdowns. Simply choose to start recording by utilizing the line-in or external microphone. I loved the FM radio ability and it gave me the freedom for “alternative” audio sources or to record “live”/concert music. The games weren’t spectacular, but were great fun to play and offer another option for entertainment. I uploaded 40 digital photos of varying resolution and viewing the brilliant colors and detail of each on the LCD screen was stimulating. System setup allowed for backlight and contrast adjustments, system reset and a power off timer, which functioned perfectly. Memory management provided ease of switching between onboard flash or SD memory usage. The transition between the two was also seamless.

This unit was packed with all the extras you could desire. An easy-to-understand CD-ROM guide, instructions in eight languages, padded ear buds, AC charger with USB receptacle, USB cable, line-in cable and adjustable padded armband. The controls on this elegant but sturdy player include an external mic, earphone jack, charging jack, USB port, EQ/play/bookmark button, A-B repeating/record button, power on/off/escape button, toggle control button, reset button and SD slot. You can also use the optional neck strap.
 

Conclusion
My only “wish list” for this unit was very short. Add AM radio capability for talk show/sports enthusiasts and enlarge the “cutouts” of the armband for the controls as they were still functional but difficult to access. That’s it!
Like my beautiful woman, the MP313X is striking, stunning, sexy, strong, alluring and meant for me. While she is perfect, the Pic n’ Roll, for a machine, certainly will fill that description for your multi-media needs.
