Overview
Chic, hip, niche, cool, rad and so
uptown. Those are just some of the words that come to mind while
wearing the PIX Sports LED device. Think it’s just for kids or
teenagers? Think again. You can use this small form device as a
bright safety display at night while jogging, riding your bike,
skateboarding or even for those of you who have an ultra light plane
(ok, maybe not that far…). This fun clip on has six separate
functions to satisfy anyone’s yearning for a multi-use product. So,
you have the desire to be the next world decathlon champion? Well,
strap the PIX Sports LED on and you will definitely get noticed even
if your athleticism doesn’t. How about a Motion Responsive Display
(MRD) changing the LED patterns and display based upon the
proportional differences in body motion. It functions as a watch,
stopwatch, timer, pattern maker, counter, messages and all around
communicator when traditional speech either doesn’t exist (people
simply don’t know how to say hello anymore; hence the PIX Sports as
an intermediary to “break the ice”) or people are too reluctant to
do so. In an age of high tech wizardry and convergence, what a
great idea to have a device with simplicity in mind, but so advanced
it grabs your attention and keeps it.

You decide what it
is best suited for in your environment, but the coolness factor will
never wear off and you will stand out from the crowd all without
having to color your hair psychedelic purple or green, a body full
of piercing and tattoos or any other modifications. Just clip it on
your shirt, sleeve, pants pocket and start “communicating”. The
controls (you expected numerous didn’t you?) consist of only two
(A&B) with one on each side of this 75mm (3” X 1” X 0.5”) X 12mm and
a weight of only 23.5g (including batteries and included clip). The
Sports unit operates on two 3v CR2032 lithium batteries and can keep
its juice for approximately 70 hours running constantly. Think of
all those people you can meet in that time. You also have one user
manual included, but the directions are a little confusing in the
English translation. This has usually been a problem when trying to
market the latest tech gear in English speaking countries. My
advice: Hire an English teacher to ensure the instructions are
precise and understandable. However, being such a simple device
with only two buttons and the ease with which technology enables
quick comprehension of “pictographs”; one only needs to look at the
pictures and, hey, it keeps your mind more active trying to figure
out some of the functions. The batteries are enclosed in the oval
device structure and protected by two rubber sealed caps fitting
tightly to keep it dry. The clip fits easily into the unit with a
screw. Slip it on and it’s very secure and, yes, I even dropped it
to see if it would function. It did. Very sturdy.
I always enjoy testing and reviewing the
latest gadgets and high tech items to determine what else I can
utilize them for besides the manufacturer’s intended use. After
all, I want it for MY uses and me. And everything made can be
cross-utilized with a little thinking, ingenuity and time. Every
audio or video product I have is maximized for different platforms.
So, use this little wonder and begin your engineering or invention
adventure (safely, of course). The stopwatch is great while
running, jogging or walking for time purposes, but also great for
those late night jaunts to get you relaxed. And what better way to
have a dual function than safety as well as being able to view your
time in total darkness. Sure, you could use a “funky”, ugly looking
watch on your wrist, but who wants to try and find the button to
illuminate the stopwatch or watch time. It’s ready when you are and
you’ll get noticed at the same time (you never know who will be out
jogging and the “chance” meeting you seek). You can even see your
car lock easily to fit your key in late at night without having
another “gadget” to accomplish that. Use the large LED characters
to time that boss of yours who is a little “long winded” in the
meeting to give you a cue when it’s time to have someone ring or
vibrate your cell phone to get you out of there. Put it on the
refrigerator and leave messages and be an ecological hero for saving
paper. Rev it up on the dance floor and create your own lighting
atmosphere without the DJ lights. Don’t forget the moves you’ll
make just to see the MRD mode move to your undulating body. Just
think of the money you save by not having to take dance lessons.
You’ll definitely grab attention from that special someone you wish
to meet. No digital alarm clock and can’t see the time early in the
morning when waking up? Put your PIX on the wall or night stand and
you’ll see the time instantly (and you can’t hit the snooze button,
so you have to get up!). Girls would love this as a belt buckle or
hip jewelry accessory to impress their friends. Flash messages
across the room in school (well, you shouldn’t, but kids will be
kids) because we know teenagers can’t last a minute without
“talking”. Or, if your spouse just happens not to be speaking to
you and doesn’t want to hear what you have to say; hold up the PIX
and you can get your point across. And it’s great for speech or
hearing impaired individuals to communicate quickly and easily.
Now, if we can just get Xenofreaks to incorporate an MP3 into this
thing, hey, the iPod is dead in the water. A necklace would be nice
to see included in the package (it is included in the PIX medallion
though, which is also reviewed). Perhaps, and Organic Light
Emitting Diode (OLED) unit is on the horizon? Remember, “xeno” means
something foreign, stranger or unknown so they certainly selected
the right name for their company. The PIX Sports seeks to erase
that alien or uncertain feeling.
Conclusion
Overall, this is a well-designed fun,
high tech gadget you can use for many purposes and everyone will
enjoy. Figure out your own uses for this handy device and expand
your cognitive horizons. The only shortfall here is the directions
need to be clearly expressed in English and not in a “broken”
brogue. Price hovers around $25 so it’s also light on the
